The Barley Field

An Original Plein air Acrylic study for a  painting.

The sun was shining today and  I thought I would ‘take to the fields’ and do some plein air painting.  I had such a lovely relaxing day in the sunshine doing what I love best and this is the result!. I will use this painting as a study for a larger painting to do in the studio.

An Original Contemporary Landscape

Acrylic Painting

The inspiration for this painting comes from the work of the late Irish artist Markey Robinson.   Depicting a very rural Irish setting the painting is created in a Contemporary style in a vivid colourful palette (unlike Robinson’s more subdued tones).

‘The Potato Pickers’
I don’t think we ever give a thought to how the humble potato arrives on our dinner plate, but then again why should we! As I observed the local ‘spud’ farmers harvesting the crop even with the latest hi-tech farm machinery it is still very hard work on a very cold frosty September morning.

‘THE WET FIELD’
Spotted dark clouds gathering over the horizon “rain on the way”.

Continuing my ‘ Irish fields’ series this contemporary style painting is rendered using a knife in thick impasto oil paints on a 5 X 7 ins primed board.

THE CROP FIELD
It has long since been a tradition here in IRELAND where landowners and farmers had names for their different fields. The names usually related to local history or folklore. This field is the view from the bottom of my garden. The local farmer has planted potatoes in it which is now almost ready to harvest, so I name this field ‘the crop field’

The painting depicts an early morning view of the field. It is painted on 6 X 6 inch gesso primed board. The painting is rendered in thick impasto oil paints. It has been created using a palette knife to achieve a textured look.

IRISH FARMHOUSE
Surrounded by rich agricultural land stands the Irish Farmhouse. What may appear from a distance as a quaint, idyllic dwelling is more likely to be part of a large progressive farming enterprise now a place of high-tech equipment and powerful machinery.
This is an impressionist style painting on a 5 X 7 ins gesso primed board. The painting is rendered in thick impasto oil paints using a knife only. I love the knife as it always gives the work a loose spontaneous feel that is thick in textured and fresh and crisp in colour.

‘New Season’
Early September and the summer harvest is complete as the ground is now prepared for the winter crop. Not quite sure yet what the new crop is going to be, I wait in anticipation, (what an exciting life I have!!)

This is an impressionist oil painting on a 5 X 7 inch gesso primed board. The painting is rendered using a palette knife only. It’s an atmospheric painting capturing the richness and warmth of the Autumn colours. I like the bold contrast of the bright sky against the darkness of the rich earth.
